This Plant-Based Meat Startup is Going To Space Aboard SpaceX
SpaceX-25 will launch with a briefcase full of nutritional fungi protein to test whether the organism can grow in microgravity and be a fresh food source for deep space travel.
Space travel is having a moment right now. One of the most challenging aspects of sustaining life in space is finding a way to grow food. Enter Nature’s Fynd. This company is creating meatless and dairy-free food made with Fy, a new-to-the-world nutritional fungi protein with origins in an acidic hot spring at Yellowstone National Park. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and NASA to better understand how life thrives in adverse environments. Now their protein Fy is ready to take the big trip to space aboard SpaceX CRS-25 which was originally scheduled for June 9, 2022. The mission is currently on hold and is anticipated to be rescheduled shortly.
They also just brought their patties to breakfast mentues at seven Yellowstone lodges, and dairy-free cream cheese to Yellowstone’s General Stores across the National Park in of celebration of Yellowstone’s 150th anniversary this year. Through a donation to the nonprofit Yellowstone Forever, Nature’s Fynd is sponsoring the sesquicentennial celebration at Yellowstone. Visitation at National Parks is up over 25% since 2020, and guests looking to explore iconic destinations like Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring will also be able to explore the possibilities of Fy with these vegan foods.
A bit more about Fy: This sustainable protein source is a favorite of Bill Gates (among others who have invested: Bloomberg, Branson, & Gore, etc.), and became a "unicorn" with over a billion dollar valuation after their successful Series C in 2021. Packed with protein and fiber and kind to the environment (requires 99% less land, emits 94% less greenhouse gasses, and uses 99% less water than beef at scale), Fy can be used in many delicious forms: from cream cheese, to chicken, to chocolate mousse – right now, their dairy-free cream cheese and meatless breakfast patties are on shelves in grocers like Whole Foods.
