Title of the Role: Coordinator, Animal Welfare

Short Description of Role: The Animal Welfare Coordinator will assist the Research and Animal Care teams in the implementation of Farm Sanctuary’s on-site animal welfare program elevating the needs and preferences of the individual animals with regard to their behavioral, emotional, and social lives. This program will provide positive welfare through animal learning opportunities, environmental enrichment, animal welfare assessments and individual welfare plans.

Responsibilities:
Animal learning opportunities
Use science-based, non-aversive, and force-free training techniques to provide the animal residents with agency in their daily lives and move towards cooperative veterinary care
Enrichment program
Work with Care staff to expand and manage the enrichment program, including daily provision and assessment of goal-oriented enrichment for all animal residents
Welfare plans and welfare assessments
Create goal-oriented individualized welfare plans for residents who need additional attention
Implement regular animal welfare assessments for all animals
Animal welfare research
Work with the Research team to design original research aimed at investigating what the sanctuary residents need and prefer, how to restore their agency, and how sanctuaries can provide for these animals

Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years of professional experience in a related field
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Skilled in ethical, science-based animal training techniques
Familiarity with utilizing environmental enrichment to improve welfare in a captive environment
Excellent observational skills
Highly flexible and adaptable to ever-changing internal and external environments
Self-motivated team player
Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, troubleshoot, and follow through in a timely manner, ensuring project completion

Familiarity, commitment to, and experience with the practice of equity and social justice, and the principles embedded in Farm Sanctuary’s mission

Report to: Manager, Research & Animal Welfare and Manager, Animal Care

Location: Watkins Glen, NY
Pay: $23.00 per hour
Travel: Ability to travel, as needed
