Startup Stage?

Bootstrapped

What led you to where you are today?

For decades, granola has been defined by sweetness, with ingredients chosen without cultural intention or significance. As a first-generation Cantonese American, I wanted the umami depth and savory complexity that the Cantonese palate carries. None of it had ever been in granola, so I built UMAMI GRANOLA, starting with Dau-Si-Do, named for dau-si, the fermented black soybeans that anchor the blend alongside hoisin and fresh ginger.

What do you wish you knew before embarking on your entrepreneurial journey?

The scope of building a single-founder brand is far broader than most assume. Product, content, operations, channel strategy, regulatory, and community each become full-fledged disciplines in their own right. Recognizing this from the start lets you build with intention rather than reaction.

What is the most difficult decision you've had to make regarding your business so far?

Deciding where to focus promotional investment as a bootstrapped brand. Building a brand from the ground up means weighing many channels and opportunities against limited resources. The discipline of choosing where to commit and where to wait has been one of the most consequential decisions to make.

What can you help the VEGPRENEUR community with?

Twenty years in omnichannel marketing has given me a strong eye for brand positioning. I'm also happy to share what I've learned launching a self-funded brand and building a new category around cultural specificity.

How can the VEGPRENEUR community help you?

I would welcome connections with fellow founders to share lessons from each other's journeys. Beyond that, introductions to plant-based retailers, buyers, and channel partners aligned with cultural specificity and premium positioning would be meaningful.

Fun fact about you:

I'm into extreme sports, including snowboarding, and am an advanced certified scuba diver!

Anything else you would like to share?

UMAMI GRANOLA is the first Cantonese breakfast granola, AAPI-founded and woman-owned, recently launched May 1, 2026, for AAPI Heritage Month. Our Dau-Si-Do blend is plant-based savory umami granola, anchored by fermented black soybeans, hoisin, and fresh ginger. These ingredients are the foundation of the Cantonese dim sum culinary tradition. With savory breakfast occasions up 18.5% YoY per Tastewise 2026 and Asian and ethnic food categories growing nearly 4x faster than overall grocery per Circana 2026, UMAMI GRANOLA brings genuine cultural specificity to a category that has been defined by sweetness for decades.
