Founder Spotlight: Matt Goss (Herbidoor)
Meet Matt Goss
Company:
Herbidoor
We deliver fresh plant based meals direct to our customers door throughout the eastern states of Australia
Startup Stage:
I started my business with $200, so you could say I definitely bootstrapped it. I have now moved into the growth phase where I have a lot of the ground work done and am building on my hard work.
Location:
Gold Coast, Australia
What led you to where you are today?
I started Herbidoor in 2018 with a vision to deliver fresh and delicious vegan comfort food locally in the Tweed Coast area. This quickly expanded to the Gold Coast and Brisbane as well. When transitioning the veganism I wanted to be able to eat all the home-cooked familiar tastes I grew up with, without the animal cruelty. I noticed that access to easy vegan comfort food at home was lacking and so I started Herbidoor to help make being vegan easier. Herbidoor now has a team of chefs, and we deliver all throughout Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, and South Australia.
What do you wish you knew before embarking on your entrepreneurial journey?
That you have to work hard, and consistently. Being an entrepreneur usually means no days off especially in the start-up and growth phases. Even if you aren't at work, and are trying to have some downtime, your mind usually goes to work.
What is the most difficult decision you've had to make regarding your business so far?
Not having a background in food manufacturing or logistics I have really had to figure out everything from scratch. Trying to find the answers to problems I had no idea that could even occur, has been tough. Trying to keep everything as eco-friendly as possible in an industry that has a lot of single-use items has been challenging.
What can you help the VEGPRENEUR community with?
I have been in business for myself for approximately 10 years, so I have learned a lot in that time and have had to become a bit of a jack of all trades as I generally try to keep costs lean in my business so I do a lot myself until I get to a point where I feel comfortable to outsource.
How can the VEGPRENEUR community help you?
I'm not on social media so my wife (Amanda Goss) has requested to join the Facebook group. We would like to connect with other plant-based business owners, as being in business, especially a fully vegan business can be tough and isolating sometimes.
Fun fact about you:
When I was a kid I had an imaginary friend and his name was Crack.
