Subway Launches Plant-Based Chicken Sandwich
Edited by The VEGPRENEUR Team
Subway Switzerland has partnered with Planted to launch a nationwide plant-based Teriyaki Sandwich, marking a major step in making sustainable protein mainstream.
What began as a playful social media exchange has turned into a nationwide rollout: Subway Switzerland has officially launched the Planted Teriyaki Sandwich in partnership with Planted, the Swiss leader in plant-based meat.
This collaboration marks a major milestone for both brands. For Subway, it strengthens the company’s “Swissness” strategy by working with local producers that deliver clean-label, sustainable, and high-quality products. For Planted, it’s another step in making plant-based protein accessible to the masses—inside one of the world’s biggest restaurant chains.
From Social Media Joke to Nationwide Launch
The story started last spring, shortly after Switzerland’s Federal Supreme Court ruling on the labeling of plant-based meat products. Amid the public debate, Subway Switzerland chimed in with a cheeky comment:
“If this post gets 10 likes, we’ll order the ‘not-call-it-chicken-anymore’ for Subway.”
Those ten likes quickly turned into hundreds, sparking a viral conversation that planted the seed (literally) for today’s launch. On October 1, 2025, the Planted Teriyaki Sandwich officially arrived in all Subway restaurants across Switzerland.
Swissness Meets Innovation
By working with Planted, Subway is doubling down on its commitment to local sourcing and consumer demand for plant-based options.
“The demand for plant-based sandwich fillings is growing,” said Hamza Ayub, CMO of Convenience House AG (Subway Switzerland). “We want to meet this need with tasty, varied choices and partner with Swiss companies known for quality, sustainability, and innovation. Planted is the perfect partner for this.”
A Plant-Based Favorite With a Teriyaki Twist
The new sandwich features planted.chicken in Subway’s signature teriyaki style, paired with crunchy vegetables and freshly baked bread. It’s designed to deliver on taste while balancing health and sustainability benefits.
“This partnership is very special to us,” said Pascal Bieri, Co-Founder of Planted. “A true shift towards a better protein future is only possible if our healthy, sustainable, plant-based proteins are offered side by side with animal meat—and are made accessible to all. Gastronomy partners like Subway play a crucial role here, and we’re excited to show millions of guests together that plant-based not only benefits health, the environment, and animal welfare but also tastes amazing.”
What’s Next
The Planted Teriyaki Sandwich is available nationwide in Switzerland as of October 1, 2025. Fans will also be able to enjoy it every Saturday as the Sub of the Day for CHF 6.90.
More collaborations between Subway and Planted are already in the works, signaling the start of a long-term partnership that blends global reach with Swiss innovation.
