This Investment Firm Switched From Investing In Mining Companies To Investing In Our Planet

Few investment firms are willing to completely overhaul their philosophy to transition from mining to sustainability investments, however, Right Seasons Investments did exactly that in 2022. Now they're going all in on sustainable and vegan investments.

When now CEO Tyler Lewis got involved with Right Season Investments Corp. in 2022, it was still called Roadman Investments. Roadman was a simple investment issuer that mostly solely invested in junior mining companies. After taking a hard look at themselves, the group decided to do a complete overhaul of the business and philosophy to transition the business to a sustainable investment fund.

There were a few reasons the group decided to pivot to sustainable and vegan investments:

  1. Changing market trends- The market demand for sustainable and vegan products and services is growing rapidly, driven by factors such as increasing environmental awareness, health consciousness, and ethical considerations.

  2. Environmental Concerns- The negative environmental impacts associated with mining, such as deforestation, habitat destruction, and pollution have led the firm to reevaluate its investment priorities.

  3. Social Responsibility- Investing in sustainable and vegan companies allows the firm to support businesses prioritizing social responsibility and ethical practices. This aligns with their broader commitment to making positive social and environmental impacts through investing.

  4. Risk Management- Investing in mining projects can involve significant financial and reputational risks, particularly related to regulatory compliance, community relations, and environmental liabilities. Transitioning to sustainable investing offers their company and investors more stable and resilient investment opportunities with potentially lower risk profiles.

  5. Long-Term profitability- the firm recognizes the long-term growth potential of sustainable markets driven by changing consumer preferences, regulatory incentives, and technological innovation. By positioning themselves in this sector, they feel their firm is uniquely positioned to capture substantial returns on our investment over time.

Pivoting an investment fund so drastically doesn't come without its set of challenges. Tyler shares that some of the challenges included:

  1. Repositioning Brand Identity- Shifting from one investment focus to another requires carefully repositioning the firm’s brand identity and messaging.

  2. Adapting Investment Expertise- Investing in sustainable and vegan ventures requires a different skill set and expertise compared to mining. We have had to acquire new knowledge about sustainability metrics, renewable technologies, plant-based markets, and other relevant areas to effectively evaluate new investment opportunities and make informed decisions.

Clearly, Right Seasons sees a bright future for sustainability businesses, as Tyler shares: "The future of the sustainable business space is extremely promising and is likely to continue experiencing significant growth and innovation. As consumer preferences continue to change and shift towards more sustainable products, the future of sustainable business is likely to follow suit and experience increased investment."

For businesses and founders looking to work with Right Seasons, here are four criteria they typically look for when evaluating companies:

  • Industry disruptors

  • Innovators for the betterment of society

  • Companies with the ability to deliver returns for their shareholders

  • Companies that are employing sustainable business practices

In terms of the businesses that Tyler is looking to invest in at the moment, he shares: "Businesses that have long-term future and are capitalizing on global trends. From a public company standpoint, we want them to be undervalued with a good structure and the ability to see rapid growth from a market standpoint as well as a brand. We look to invest in companies we believe can become market leaders."

Tyler and the Right Seasons team are always working on new deals and helping their existing portfolio companies grow. "We are excited to see the progress from our portfolio companies. Recently, our portfolio companies Bettermoo(d) and Blender Bites have experienced significant growth and achieved significant milestones. We continue to be excited about their future prospects and the prospects of all our portfolio companies. We are currently evaluating all sorts of investment deals across the sustainable business landscape. We hear many pitches from some very exciting and innovative companies and are very excited about the direction this industry is heading."
